Class 4 Shingles and the Colorado Insurance Discount: What Homeowners Should Know
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the closest thing the roofing industry has to a hail-proof upgrade — and Colorado is one of the states where they pay for themselves fastest. Here is how the rating works, what the insurance discount looks like, and how to make sure you actually receive it.
What "Class 4" actually means
Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test: a 2-inch steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the shingle, twice in the same spot, and the shingle must not crack or tear. Standard architectural shingles are typically Class 3 or unrated. Class 4 products achieve the rating with rubberized polymer or modified-asphalt blends that absorb impact instead of fracturing.
Important: Class 4 is not "hail proof." Very large stones can still damage any shingle. The rating means the roof survives the storms that total standard roofs — the difference between filing a claim every five years and not filing at all.
The Colorado insurance discount
Most major carriers writing homeowner policies in Colorado offer a premium discount for verified Class 4 roofs. Commonly reported ranges are 5% to 25% depending on the carrier, policy form and territory. On a typical Denver-metro premium, that is often $200-$600 per year — every year, for the life of the roof.
Two catches to know:
- Discounts are not automatic. You must notify your agent and provide documentation after installation.
- Some policies trade the discount for a cosmetic-damage exclusion on the roof. Read the endorsement before accepting it — it is not always a good trade.
How to document your Class 4 roof
- Confirm the exact product's UL 2218 Class 4 listing before signing the contract — the rating applies to specific product lines, not entire brands.
- Keep the contractor's final invoice showing the product name and rating, plus the packaging labels or a photo of the bundle wrappers if possible.
- Send both to your insurance agent and ask for the discount effective date in writing.
- Re-shop your policy at renewal — carriers price Class 4 discounts differently, and switching is easier than most people expect.
Does the upgrade pay off?
On a typical Denver home, Class 4 adds roughly $1,500-$3,500 to a replacement. With a $300+/year premium discount, payback is often five to eight years — before counting the deductibles you avoid by not filing hail claims. After a claim-funded replacement, when insurance is already paying for the base roof, the payback is usually much faster.
